It can measure the elapsed time, intensity of light reflection along an optical fiber and compute the distance for breaks or attenuation. Optical time domain reflectometer functions by injecting a series of optical pulses into the fiber under test. They also extract, from the same end of the fiber, light that is scattered or reflected back. The intensity of the return pulses are measured and integrated as a function of time, and are plotted as a function of fiber length. Optical time domain reflectometers may also be used for estimating the fiber’s length and overall attenuation, including splice and mated-connector losses. Additionally, they can be used to locate faults, such as breaks. Light source is laser diode or LED is used to inject an optical signal into fiber to test the performance of a fiber optic system. Laser optical sources are usually used to test single mode fiber and LED optical sources. Important test source performance specifications to consider when searching for a fiber optic test source including center wavelength, spectral width, operating mode, and maximum power output. Fiber optic power meters are instruments that measure the average power of a continuous light beam. They are used to test signal power in fiber optic networks. Fiber optic power meters consist of a solid state detector, signal conditioning circuitry, and a digital display. In short wavelength systems, the detector is made of silicon. In long wavelength systems, the detector is made of indium gallium arsenide.
